We have the perfect climate, water, soil and biodiversity for organic production.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Local crop varieties and autochthonous breeds also play a fundamental role in the development of organic production, due to their adaptation to the environment and resistance to diseases.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;50px&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;17263&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;50px&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner content_width=&#8221;grid&#8221; el_class=&#8221;dos_columnas&#8221; el_id=&#8221;agriculture&#8221;][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;17988&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221;][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;50px&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3>Agriculture<\/h3>\n<p>The main crop that covers most of the agricultural surface area in Asturias is the <strong>apple tree<\/strong> with local varieties, used to produce apple juice and cider.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Other relevant crops are the <strong>cranberry <\/strong>and other small fruit, the kiwi and other fruit varieties. Asturias enjoys a perfect climate for some nuts such as the <strong>chestnut<\/strong>, <strong>walnut <\/strong>or <strong>hazelnut<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In terms of horticulture, small productions dominate with a great variety of crops; some of them are traditional crops with local varieties like the <strong>Asturian bean<\/strong> and <strong>spelt<\/strong>.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;50px&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner content_width=&#8221;grid&#8221; el_class=&#8221;dos_columnas&#8221; el_id=&#8221;livestock&#8221;][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3>Livestock<\/h3>\n<p>Asturias is a predominantly stockbreeding region that preserves traditional management such as the use of grazing land and the fodder provided by the actual farm. Therefore, the transition to organic production is less complicated in comparison to more intensive productions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Most of the livestock farms breed beef cattle, with autochthonous breeds such as Asturiana de Los Valles or Carre\u00f1ana, and Asturiana de la Monta\u00f1a or Casina. La raza principal es la frisona, aunque tambi\u00e9n hay otras razas m\u00e1s r\u00fasticas y adaptadas al pastoreo.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Breeding dairy cattle<\/strong> is another of the most important activities that has a great organic production potential in Asturias. Friesian is the main breed, although there are also other hardier breeds that adapt to grazing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There are fewer <strong>sheep and goat livestock <\/strong>farms. Organic production farms breed some of the most important flocks of Asturian autochthonous endangered breeds, such as the Oveya Xalda and the Cabra Bermeya.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As occurs in Asturias in general terms, there are fewer horse-breeding organic production farms, too, as well as only a few <strong>poultry <\/strong>or <strong>pig farms<\/strong>.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;50px&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner content_width=&#8221;grid&#8221; el_class=&#8221;dos_columnas&#8221;][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3>Beekeeping<\/h3>\n<p>Asturias is a <strong>paradise for bees<\/strong> thanks to the food diversity found in wild vegetation, in forests, in pasture lands and in traditional crops such as the apple tree.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Different types of honey<\/strong> are produced in Asturias. COPAE\u2019s register of processors includes <strong>small craft firms as well as large agri-food industries<\/strong>.
